Blogging is a relatively easy skill to learn, but actually being successful at blogging?
Well, that’s a different story altogether.
Have you ever worked on a blog for weeks or months, then wondered, how do I increase traffic to my blog?
I know I have.
I actually tried my hand at blogging long before I started to get interested in online business.
It didn’t stick, and I gave up because I couldn’t seem to get anyone interested in actually reading the blog.
The key really is to get traffic, and simply writing about what interests you often won’t be enough to get you the traffic you need.
The good thing is that there are some ways to get traffic that don’t require you to fundamentally change what you do.
So, where do you start?
Being active is critical for any type of website or online business.
The first, and most obvious, example of this is regularly updating your blog.
But, you probably know that one already.
When I say be active, I’m referring to engaging your target audience, both on your site and off it.
For example, this involves actually replying to the comments that people make on your website, and encouraging dialogue between your readers and you.
This makes you seem more interested and can increase your authority.
One good place to start being active off your website is in communities where your audience is likely to hang out.
Forums are a fantastic place to start with this and just about any niche will have a forum of some type.
The idea behind engaging with communities is that you have a chance to promote yourself as a brand and to increase your authority.
However, you cannot use this as a chance to promote your website with every post.
That simply won’t work.
Instead, you might put the link to your blog in your profile or maybe in your signature, and let your reputation do the rest of the work.
Making Sure you are Recognized
If you are commenting on blogs, it’s worth taking the time to set up a Gravatar.
Some people don’t bother with them, but Gravatars are actually really important.
A Gravatar is basically an avatar that is used for you across many different sites, which is really important if you are doing a lot of commenting.
The idea is to set up your Gravatar as something recognizable, like a brand or your image.
There’s a bit of debate about what type of image is best, but I personally suggest you use a good photo of you.
After all, if you are commenting on other people’s blogs, you really don’t want to make it look like you are trying to sell something.
Are You Boring?
There are a million different writing styles.
Some people write long paragraphs, others write short ones (I lean towards short, obviously).
Some are serious, some use humor. Some are interesting to read, some sound like a textbook.
There are no hard and fast rules for how you write – and being different is a good thing.
But you want to remember your audience.
Your content needs to be interesting enough to engage them and also relevant to what they are looking for.
Honestly, there are a million ways to grab the attention of your audience, but the biggest piece of advice is to be yourself.
If you actually let your personality show through in your writing it can go a long way towards getting you the readership and traffic you are after.
Remember, you’re not just looking at getting new readers, you’re also looking at holding onto the ones you have.
So, don’t scare them off with your writing!
On a side note, this also means making sure you have your spelling and grammar correct and your page actually looks good.
Those things matter much more to your audience than they should.
Playing to the Search Engines
Bloggers often don’t bother with search engine optimization (SEO for short).
There are lots of reasons for this. SEO does sound complex and many people are concerned that it can get in the way of their content.
However, using SEO is the single-most important answer to the question of how do I increase traffic to my blog.
A lot of your audience will find you through search results, so you have to make sure you actually get some ranking on search engines.
Honestly, SEO isn’t as hard as it seems – and it’s a topic that I talk more about in other posts.
Most importantly, you can use some SEO approaches without that much effort and without damaging the quality of your writing.
If you’re good at writing, your audience won’t actually have any idea that you are using SEO.
Are you Novel?
No, I’m not asking if you are a novel.
Novelty is important for websites.
There are hundreds of millions of websites out there, and if you want to get noticed, you have to be different in some way.
Now, being different might be as simple as providing better information than other sites, or actually backing up what you say, or it might involve something a bit different, like a unique element in your site or brand.
Again, there are many, many options, but novelty is one thing that is going to draw people to your site.
An example of this is a blogging site by a girl gamer which focuses on a specific game very seriously.
Female gamers exist, but there are relatively few with the level of interest and dedication that male gamers have.
A site that takes advantage of that fact would seem novel, and this could significantly help with traffic.
An additional note on this topic is to keep an eye out for what is new and popular.
For example, writing about an important current event (that is relevant to your site) can give you a quick spike of traffic.
This can be great for getting people to your site, but try not to make most of your content based on current events – because those types of articles are normally irrelevant a month or so after the event.
Traffic is a fickle thing, but it is very possible to grow the traffic to your blog by being active, doing SEO and being novel.
There are many other approaches out there that are effective and everyone will find their own balance.
