In the previous article, I talked extensively about how to turn your hobby into an online business.
If you missed that article, you can go back to it here.
This article is part two and focuses on specific examples of hobbies and how to turn these into effective online businesses.
As hobbies go, photography is a pretty popular one, although unfortunately it is also a competitive field.
Photography is an interesting field because there are several different approaches to making money from photography.
One approach is to develop a hobby site like we have been talking about, and make money by promoting products.
However, it’s also possible to use the hobby website as a jumping point for your own business, promoting yourself as a photographer.
The two approaches aren’t mutually exclusive, and they actually pair together well as a single website.
This is one of the reasons that photography is a fantastic example of how to turn your hobby into an online business.
An extension of this is to use your site to sell copies of your photos, either digital copies or physical ones.
One advantage of photography as a hobby is that you can provide your own images for your site.
The images on a site are important for getting the attention of your audience, and many people have to rely on stock images, which can quickly get expensive.
By using your own images on your site, you are also showing off your photography, which is relevant for anything you are doing on your site.
Now, as I mentioned, the competition for this field is pretty high, as photography is a popular hobby overall.
However, you can still find good low competition keywords that can really help you to rank your site.
For example, two keywords in the field are:
With a QSR of 315 and 188 respectively, these aren’t low competition keywords, but they are still passable.
If we look at long tail keywords, we find that the level of competition also decreases.
Now, it’s true that the traffic also decreases, but this isn’t something to be too concerned about.
Overall, low traffic doesn’t make a keyword horrible, because you can still gain traffic from it over time.
As you can imagine, there is a huge number of topics you could address within the photography field.
You could also narrow it down further, such as a hobby site that focuses on professional photography or even something like sports photography or wedding photography.
Realistically, the options are endless.
As for affiliate programs that you could join, Amazon really is a good choice for this field.
Amazon has a huge selection of cameras and camera products.
It also has a reputation as being a (largely) reliable site, which tends to make people more comfortable about buying expensive items from there.
There are also other affiliate programs out there that offer services like printing or even website development – so there is a huge amount of options.
To be honest, it’s a bit of a debate whether cosmetics is actually a hobby or not.
However, for a lot of girls, purchasing and using makeup could be considered a hobby, particularly as they are purchase oriented and frequently look for new approaches and techniques.
This is actually a particularly interesting field because beauty and cosmetics is a relatively recession-proof industry that has continued to grow throughout the economic challenges of recent years.
Actually, that isn’t even too surprising, because people need a way to feel good when the economy is bad, and cosmetics is a relatively inexpensive way to achieve this.
It is also a very wide-reaching market.
As you can see, there is a range of good keywords for the field:
As with other hobbies, you aren’t limited to actually promoting the cosmetic products, and you can also promote accessories and other related products.
If you are an outdoors person or a sports enthusiast, there are a wide range of hobbies out there that might fascinate you.
For example, you might choose to develop a site in the area of tennis, hiking, cross fit, rock climbing and even martial arts.
Personally, I love to exercise, and know that there is a huge market in the fitness niche overall, not to mention the large range of accessories that go with even just one of these hobbies, such has pedometers, outdoor clothing, sunglasses and socks, just to name a few.
My son is in martial arts and this is another example of a popular niche.
People often choose to promote equipment in general as well as training accessories.
Some sites have been highly effective at developing extensive informational articles on various martial arts gear, including all the really cool training bags, gloves and even weaponry.
One gentleman even approached a studio and was able to get support from them.
He was successful at entering an affiliate marketing agreement, which became very profitable for him and for the studio.
For me personally, an outdoor hobby with a lot of appeal is gardening.
This is a huge field, and there are many different ways you could subdivide it if you wanted to.
There are also some pretty good keywords for the field if you do some digging around (no pun intended).
Regardless of what hobby or sub-hobby you choose, being creative is important.
You have to find ways of distinguishing yourself from your competition and creating something that is memorable for your readers.
If I was developing a gardening site, one area I might focus on is growing vegetables.
For me, this is a particularly interesting area, because the vegetables you grow can supplement the food you buy and can help improve your health.
Some interesting keywords that I found in this area were:
Now, I’m lucky that I actually have ample space to plant all the vegetables that I want, but there are always workarounds for people more limited in space.
In fact, this is another topic you could cover on this type of site.
For a gardening site, there are a lot of ways to be unique.
For example, you might choose to grow organic fruits and turn these into a jam.
Over time, you might find that you develop a local following or maybe you have developed unusual or interesting recipes that have become popular online.
This combination is potentially more interesting than a straight out gardening site, and there will probably be few sites that take a similar approach.
There are also lots of different ways you could monetize this type of site.
You could sell a recipe book, or even some of your products through an online store. You could also promote affiliate products as we have been discussing.
When you look at making money online, hobbies may not be the obvious choice.
Despite this, you really can work out how to turn your hobbies into an online business, and there are many profitable hobbies out there.
In essence, you are looking for a hobby that has products that you can promote and that has an audience willing and able to spend money on it.
The amount of hobbies that meet these criteria is really quite high.
A hobby site is just one type of niche site, but honestly, I think a hobby site is one of the best places for a person to start making money online.
If nothing else, hobby sites are a little easier to get right and a little more interesting to the writer than most niche sites.
