For many people, working from home sounds like a dream, and not something they could ever do.
In fact, actually finding working from home jobs that are not scams seems exceptionally difficult, just because there are so many scams out there.
However, you shouldn’t give up on the idea of working from home simply because of the scams. There really are legitimate jobs and you can find them with a bit of hunting.
The first place to start with working from home is actual jobs. There are some physical businesses that employ people and allow them to work all or part of the time from home.
For people lucky enough to get them, these jobs are fantastic, but unfortunately, they aren’t that common. They also come with most of the restrictions that you would have with a normal job, such as having a boss to report to and having a relatively strict timetable.
The other problem with these types of jobs is that actually getting them tends to require experience or education and companies don’t tend to trust just anyone with working from home. If you can get one of these jobs, good for you, but honestly, if you can get one, you’re probably not reading this post to start off with.
There is a second type of actual job that you might run across.
This is where you end up working for an online company. There are many companies out there that employ a large number of individuals online, often for tasks like writing or data entry.
Finding jobs like this really isn’t that difficult, but finding good ones is much harder.
Many companies like this will hire just about anyone.
The problem is that jobs like this tend to require a lot of work and pay very badly.
Data entry is a really good example of this. There are data entry jobs out there, but in many cases, you will end up making less than $5 an hour.
This might be desirable if you are really desperate for money, but it isn’t a good long-term job.
A lot of the advantages of working online come from having a job that simply doesn’t fit in the traditional job structure, one that gives you a lot more freedom with your life. Because of this, the jobs I’ve talked about so far don’t really cut it, and you need to look elsewhere to find working from home jobs that are not scams and are good for making money.
Working for Yourself
True success in jobs where you are working from home really does come when you are working for yourself.
I have seen lots of websites offer ‘fantastic income opportunities’, but be very wary of these. In reality, you don’t need a special system or a special opportunity to be successful online. It’s very possible to build your own opportunity without having to rely on anyone else.
Have you ever looked at just how popular the internet is?
Laptops, desktop computers, tablets and smartphones can all get online, and it seems like people are on the internet everywhere they possibly can.
It’s not just browsing either. Buying online has become really easy and online sales continue to increase dramatically. Making money online lets you take advantage of this trend, and actually tap into this growing market.
When I talk about working for yourself, I’m talking about not having a boss, not working for a company and not having anyone to report to.
Don’t get me wrong, it isn’t always plain sailing, and making money online does still take work.
Working for yourself online doesn’t work for everyone. Some people don’t like the lack of structure. Others find it difficult to actually get what they need to done when there are no strict deadlines and no one forcing them to work.
What I’m really talking about is developing your own online business.
I’ll be honest, when I first started considering this line of work it sounded too complicated and too scary to even attempt. However, the potential advantages of this approach were just too good not to give it a try.
Since then I have learned a lot and I honestly think that the best working from home jobs that are not scams involve starting up your own online business, ideally by making your own website.
This might seem challenging, but there really is a lot of support out there.
Generally speaking, there are three main ways to make money from a website. Some people might pick a single one of these, while others might try to do multiple.
The approaches are:
- Selling your own product or service
- Affiliate marketing
What I do like about all three of these ways of earning money is that you can focus your site on basically whatever you like. There are millions of different topics (or niches) that sites can focus on, and a large number of these have significant potential for money making.
Some people start out by picking an interest or a passion, and using this as the launching board for their website. After all, it’s always easier to spend a lot of time working on something you are already interested in rather than something that you can’t stand.
Other people look for a specific need and try to fill it.
There are many examples of this online. For example, I have seen many sites that review different products within a category, making it easy to see the advantages and disadvantages of the main products available.
This can make for a very interesting and attractive site, because it is often difficult to compare between products otherwise.
One of the best things about working for yourself online is that the growth opportunities are pretty much limitless.
You earn money through your own approaches and your own learning, and there is no company capping your income at a certain level or requiring you to approach problems in a specific way. Instead, you get the freedom to choose and find something that actually works for you and works well.
A final thing I want to talk about is spotting scams online.
Regardless of what approach you want to take, finding working from home jobs that are not scams really does require being able to spot scams when you see them.
There are a lot of products online that promote ‘easy money’ or a ‘shortcut’, claiming that they can help you to dramatically increase the amount of money you earn. Sometimes products like this are obviously fake, but other times they are so convincing that it seems like you should give it a shot.
I have heard so many stories of people who have bought something thinking that it would really help them to earn money, only to find that the product wasn’t anything like that at all. I’ve even done that myself on occasions.
Sometimes it’s possible to get your money back from sites like this, but other times it is basically impossible.
There’s no guaranteed way to spot a scam before you buy into it, but there are some things to consider that can make it a bit easier to spot when you are dealing with a scam.
Lack of Information
Say I was trying to tell you a television. How would I go about it? I’d tell you how it outperforms it competitors and I would probably give you its specs so you could compare it to other products.
However, if I was trying to sell you a bad television, I probably wouldn’t do any of that. Why? Because if I told you the specs of the television you’d know it wasn’t any good.
The same thing happens with most online products.
Companies are selling products that really aren’t that great and they won’t tell you much of anything about them.
For example, I’ve read through entire sales pages or sat through sales videos just to come out of the experience still not knowing what exactly the product was or how it was supposed to help me earn money.
What do you think about this description, which comes from an internet marketing product?
There are multiple problems with the statement. First, it is completely unrealistic, which is something I will talk about in a little. Second, it doesn’t tell you anything about what the actual product is or does.
Clearly, the product isn’t literally a money machine, but what the product actually is really isn’t obvious. In fact, the entire sales page for that product is filled with similar statements, but there is little indication of what the product is.
For me, the key term is ‘turnkey’, which generally refers to web pages that are already made for you and you basically ‘turn the key’ to start them up. Sounds wonderful in theory, but in practice, you end up paying for a website that is identical or almost identical to many others out there and has little to no potential for money making.
As a general rule, legitimate products don’t tend to be vague about what they are offer.
For example, I strongly support an online service called Wealthy Affiliate, and I’m not vague about it. I’ve written articles that are several thousand words in length talking about what the service offers and what it doesn’t offer, as well as how it compares to others.
If a site is vague about a particular product there is normally a reason. Sometimes this is because they are reviewing a product they haven’t actually tried, but most of the time it’s because the product is nowhere near as good as it seems.
Most companies will exaggerate about their products to a degree. Even legitimate products tend to overestimate their success rates and underestimate just how challenging the product is.
However, scam products tend to take this exaggeration to an extreme level. An example of this comes from the same site:
It’s also very common for these types of sites to offer ClickBank earning summaries as ‘proof’ that their system can earn high amounts of money – even though these types of income statements are relatively easy to fake.
The truth is, earning money online is not an easy or a fast venture, and it is going to take time regardless of what approach you use. Any product that offers fast and easy income is being very misleading and is trying to get you to spend money.
You simply can’t earn profits like that without a lot of time and effort building your business to that point.
This means that any product that suggests that you can earn a lot of money quickly and easily is probably a scam product.
Where to go From Here
It can be very difficult to find working from home jobs that are not scams and honestly I still think the best approach is for people to work for themselves and to develop their own opportunities. If you do this, you are much less likely to be the victim of many of the scams online and really do have the chance to be successful.
One challenge is that it is often difficult to know where to start with making money online, particularly as building a website and getting traffic to it are not really intuitive processes.
This is why I recommend Wealthy Affiliate, which is actually the website where I received most of my training about internet marketing and the online environment. I have talked about the advantages of Wealthy Affiliate in depth in other posts, but in general, it is a training program that offers people the chance to learn how to make money online and provides them with community support along the way.
Personally, I think that the Wealthy Affiliate community is something that everyone should try, particularly as the site offers a free starter membership and allows people to make their own websites.
Beyond everything else, perhaps the biggest advantage of Wealthy Affiliate is simply that it isn’t a get rich quick scheme. Instead, the site is realistic about what you can, and cannot achieve online, along with how long it might take you to do so.
