People often assume that everyone has the same ability to work and that people should simply find a job and work.
I wish it was that simple.
For many people, it isn’t, and depression is one of the things that makes finding and keeping a job difficult. With close to 1 in 10 adults in the United States experiencing depression, it is clearly something we have to think about.
Working when you have depression can be very challenging, but there are actually jobs for people with depression that are much easier and are actually doable.
The Difficulty with Depression
I have depression and mild social anxiety. My problems have never been severe enough to stop me from working, but they have made working difficult. In fact, sometimes I’ve been tempted to give it up and start over just to see whether there is something out there that is better.
But I didn’t, because no one intentionally makes jobs for people with depression, and it seemed like anything I found would be just as bad, if not worse.
So, what is it about depression that makes it hard to work?
It really depends on the individual.
Some people really can work and live just fine, and you wouldn’t even know they had depression. For other people, depression affects their motivation and sometimes their ability to be around others.
Often, they will become withdrawn and their productivity will decrease. Sometimes they won’t have the motivation to go into work at all, or their productivity will be so low that people will wonder why they turned up.
This isn’t something that employers understand.
I have a friend named Jenny with much more severe depression. She was able to work for a number of years, but at some point, the depression became so overwhelming that she was literally unable to. She told me about having panic attacks at work and breaking down and crying for no apparent reason.
For her, any attempt to keep a conventional job would have been torture and all but impossible.
But she did find a way, and it was the same way that I found.
The Online World
For people with depression, being online is amazing.
It is an environment that they have much more control over, and they get to choose who they communicate with and when.
I love this about the online world, because it simply doesn’t have the same amount of stress as the real world. This is fantastic when you want to get away from things or want to zone out.
The concept of making money online is actually something I stumbled into and I found the idea fascinating.
Like most people, the first indications I found of this industry was in the so-called guru marketing, where the products are rip-offs and completely misleading.
Before you ask, yes, I did get fooled a few times and spent money on things that I really shouldn’t have.
Yet, the more I dug around online the more I learned about internet marketing and making money online and I began to see that there was actually a legitimate way to make money. For me, that way is affiliate marketing, where I promote the products of other people, and I also focus on developing and selling my own products.

These approaches are commonly used together, and they can be highly effective.
In fact, a large number of websites that you see online use one or both of these approaches, or they use a third approach, where you earn money through advertising.
While earning money in these ways might seem difficult, it is very doable, and many of the success stories out there are from people (like me) who had absolutely no idea what they were doing when they started.
Now, don’t get me wrong. Making money online isn’t exactly easy. There isn’t an easy button or a simple shortcut to earn thousands of dollars without effort. Real life simply doesn’t work that way.
If you want to make money online, you do have to prepare to put in the time and the effort, but it really does pay off in the long-term.
I have always been a highly organized person, so for me, making money online came somewhat naturally, particularly when it came to learning and researching what to do. This means that running my own online business makes perfect sense.
However, this isn’t the case for everyone.
Jenny told me once that she could never do internet marketing the way I do. For her, depression means that she has trouble keeping to a schedule and forcing herself to work when she had no boss watching over her shoulder.
She makes money online too, but she does it a different way.
She is a freelance writer, and she works for many different clients online. She advises people in internet marketing techniques and skills, and she also works on academic and scientific writing. For her, it is a job that makes sense.
For Jenny, freelancing means that she has clients and she has actual deadlines. Having deadlines helps her to overcome her depression and actually gets work done. She also has a lot of flexibility with when she works and for how long. This lets her organize her work around her moods, rather than try to brute force through her depression.
When it comes to making money online, freelancing is effective as is affiliate marketing, advertising and selling your own products. These are all viable approaches and many people use them successfully.
The real question is what works best for you and for your life.
There is, however, a downside to this way of earning money.
In general, depression means that you have a tendency to stay inside, to avoid people and to avoid life to a degree, although the severity differs from one person to the next.
When you work online, it gets a lot easier to avoid going out and some people find that working this way tends to make them very isolated. This isn’t particularly healthy, and it is really important to force yourself to get out of the house and to interact with other people regularly, even if you don’t feel like it.
