What is PartyLite?
PartyLite is a direct marketing company that sells candles, fragrances and related products.
There are two key features of PartyLite.
First, it is simply a place to buy products that many people do find appealing. This can be done through the company’s website or through individual consultants.
The presence of consultants brings me to the other feature – the ability to make money.
As with many other companies, PartyLite provides an opportunity for earning income.
Now, PartyLite reviews often just focus on the products but that’s not the goal here. Instead, this post takes a detailed look at exactly how you can earn money through PartyLite.
More importantly, I consider whether the process is actually worth doing.
After all, you probably don’t want to waste time and money on an approach that isn’t going to be profitable.
How PartyLite Works
PartyLite follows a typical model, which is often called a MLM.
The term stands for multi-level marketing and it’s a reference to how you earn money.
Now, the basic idea of the company is simply that you’re selling the products. Doing so often involves holding formal or informal parties, while also pitching to friends on a regular basis.
Many direct marketing companies fall into this model, which is why you may have seen friends or acquaintances trying to sell items from one company or another. Indeed, there are many well-known MLMs out there, including doTERRA, Stella and Dot, Young Living, and Rodan + Fields.
If you have the right type of social group, the idea really can work.
With this in mind, there is income potential simply from sales. Indeed, if you had the right social network, you could stop right there.
But, that’s only half of the story.
The other part is recruiting, which is what the multi-level idea is referring to. The design of the model means that most of the income potential comes from recruitment.
Like sales, the idea starts off simple. So, the aim is to recruit other people and get them to sell the products.
However, you’re not just supposed to recruit. Instead, the objective is to build a team of people under you. To do this, you recruit people, who recruit others and so on. At the same time, each person in that structure should be actively making sales and, ideally, managing their own team.
If you can do this successfully, then the income potential is high.
This happens because there are various bonuses associated with the people you recruit and the way your team performs.
The company even estimates that its top members make 6-figure incomes.
That claim is probably accurate too – and most MLMs have some extremely successful members.
But, what does this mean for individuals?
Well, the basic structure of PartyLite is similar to many other MLMs.
In particular, you are mainly selling through parties and you don’t have to keep products in stock (versus a MLM like Paparazzi Jewelry).
This does reduce the risk.
However, to really consider how this plays out, we need to look at the compensation plan, along with PartyLite reviews.
PartyLite Compensation Plan
PartyLite breaks down its compensation approaches into three tiers.
The first of these allows you to make money just from sales alone. So, you don’t have to recruit or manage a team.
In contrast, the higher levels involve recruitment. Specifically, you have to sponsor 2 people for the Team Builder option and 4 for Unit Leader.
This might not sound too bad, but sponsoring 2 or 4 individuals is just the first step in building your team. After that, those individuals need to recruit. Likewise, you need to hit certain levels of sales a month to get the bonuses.
Besides that, the extra income from a team is partly a percentage of that team’s sales. As such, the bigger and more successful your team is, the more money you make.
Getting to that point is often challenging. Realistically, most people aren’t going to have the social connections or skills to build a large team.
And, to make matters worse, your success is strongly dependent on how your team performs.
This is one of the most frustrating things about MLMs. Realistically, you don’t have any way of making sure that your team members perform well. And, even if you’re good at sales and recruiting, they may not be.
Honestly, having your income strongly dependent on others is less than ideal. It also entirely goes against the ideas of independence and being your own boss.
The Party Model
Like many similar companies, PartyLite focuses on the idea of parties.
These are basically meetings that you hold in people’s homes, where you promote the products and try to convince people to buy.
The marketing suggests that these are fun and, to a degree, they can be.
The party system means that you’re supposed to host the events at other people’s homes. Doing so gives you access to their social networks, especially as the host is supposed to be the one who invites people.
That person also receives various bonuses based on how successful the party is.
In theory, this design encourages sales and helps you to get more potential customers.
But, the process isn’t as simple as that.
After all, you are trying to convince people to spend money. Even if they like the products, many people will be resistant.
As a result, you may make sales early on but sales will often decrease with the more parties you hold. Many of your potential customers will also get sick of the parties fairly quickly or may never be interested in them in the first place.
For that matter, the idea that you’re getting the host’s friends to a party isn’t realistic either. In most cases, people have overlapping circles of friends. This tends to mean that the same people get invited to the parties constantly.
And, with that in mind, it isn’t too surprising that making sales gets considerably harder as you go.
Because of this, many of the company’s estimates are inaccurate.
For example, they make the following income claim:
That’s based on parties that average out to $350 sales and online orders of $50.
For most people, even just having one party a week where you got $350 sales would be tough. In fact, you might just find that you can have one or two parties per month and still don’t make as many sales.
Now, this strongly depends on your social network and your sales skills.
If you had a lot of social contacts and were good at sales, there is a greater potential to make money.
Even so, having multiple successful parties per week is no easy task.
PartyLite is one of the few MLMs that does provide a bonus for sales, even if you’re not recruiting.
In particular, you can get 32% commission when you get more than $2,000 in sales per month.
Most people won’t be able to hit that $2,000 mark, especially not each month. Nevertheless, it is nice to see a company that gives members this chance.
Most MLMs require you to buy a starter kit to begin. Typically, this kit includes a selection of products and Partylite is no exception.
The approach means that you have to financially invest before you know how easy (or hard) it is to sell the items.
However, PartyLite is also unusual in that you can earn a starter kit, rather than paying outright.
The company isn’t completely clear about how you achieve this but it’s likely that you basically have to make some sales without earning commission. So, you are still paying for the items indirectly.
Still, the option to avoid an up-front investment is extremely appealing.
For some, this aspect may be a key reason to consider PartyLite over any other MLM.
The Product Selection
The main idea of PartyLite is candles and fragrance, which is reflected in their product selection. Within each of these areas there are many different types of items and no shortage of scents.
For the most part, the products themselves aren’t especially unique.
Realistically, there are dozens of different brands with candles and melting fragrances. For that matter, you can find multiple options just at the local grocery store.
Still, the products themselves would appeal to many people.
One reason is that candles and fragrances are experience-based items.
This means that people aren’t just looking for the best value for their money. Instead, they’re looking for scents they enjoy and products that fill an emotional need.
It’s easy to see how PartyLite products could meet that demand.
Now, finding PartyLite reviews for the actual products is a little difficult, because distributors aren’t supposed to sell them on Amazon. Some of the products are on Amazon anyway but most have no reviews.
However, there are some PartyLite reviews on the site itself.
These vary considerably depending on the specific product. For example, these are the ratings for the melts that the company offers.
As you can see, there are very few negative reviews.
Additionally, many of the negative reviews may apply to just one scent, rather than to all of them.
However, the review distribution isn’t as good for other products. For example, the 3-Wick Jar Candle’s reviews look like this:
Likewise, this is the distribution for Essential Jar Scented Candles
It’s also worth noting that multiple PartyLite reviews suggest that the quality and range has decreased over the years.
The problem with these areas, plus the negative PartyLite reviews all indicate that it could be fairly difficult to make sales.
Now, there are still many people passionate about the products and some of the product lines seem to be mostly free of issues. So, there is still potential to still be successful.
Honestly, it comes down to what you personally think about the products.
If you’re passionate about them yourself, then selling them may be worth the effort.
But, if you’re not, then you may be better looking at another company.
The one other thing to mention about the products is their prices. These vary considerably. However, they are more expensive than some brands and less than others.
The prices aren’t necessarily a reason to avoid the company entirely.
More than anything, I suggest considering your audience carefully. In particular, do you know people who would be willing to pay these prices for candles on a regular basis?
If you don’t, then it may be best to avoid PartyLite entirely.
PartyLite Reviews and Experiences
On paper, companies like PartyLite sound amazing.
For one thing, the potential to make money truly does exist. For that matter, you could theoretically make a considerable amount of income if you were to build a large enough team.
Those elements are part of the reason that so many people get involved.
Yet, they’re misleading.
For one thing, selling the products isn’t going to be the fun and casual affair the company implies.
This is true even if you know people who love the products.
Most members find a similar pattern with companies like PartyLite. At the beginning, they may be able to make significant sales and there may be a lot of interest in the products.
This is particularly true if there aren’t many local distributors for the company.
But, after people have been to a party or two, the novelty tends to die down and sales decrease.
Now, the company argues that candles are popular and consumable, so people will always want more.
And this is true.
But, you’re supposed to be holding multiple parties per week and making sales at them. Most people won’t want to buy new candles and fragrances that regularly.
To get around this, you need to be able to get new people to your parties and expand your influence.
It’s easy to see how tricky this can get, isn’t it?
To make matters worse, recruitment actually works against you.
More people in your team might mean higher income potential. But, this also increases the competition. So, it’s a bit of a catch-22.
Furthermore, people tend to get pretty sick of this type of company. Right now, there are probably hundreds of different direct marketing companies out there, selling many different types of products.
This can be incredibly frustrating, especially for people who have many friends who are part of these companies. For example, posts like this are very common online.
And honestly, this is no surprise.
With each consultant trying to sell products and recruit, the pressure can be fairly intense. Plus, when it comes down to it, there isn’t anything that unusual about the companies or their products.
That’s even true for PartyLite.
After all, the candles and scents might be good but there are many different places that you could get similar products.
But, enough of the doom and gloom, what do individual PartyLite reviews have to say? Specifically, do actual distributors like the company?
Well, the PartyLite reviews below suggest that at least some people do.
However, reviews for MLMs tend to be misleading.
For one thing, people often leave positive reviews because they want the company to sound as great as possible. Additionally, members often convince themselves that the opportunity is working.
Realistically, the PartyLite reviews from actual members don’t give any indication about how much money they were making (if any).
Likewise, there is no way of knowing what they expected.
For many people, this type of company can be fun and may be worth the effort – providing you’re not trying to make a full-time income or anything like that.
So, even with the positive PartyLite reviews, you might be disappointed if you want to make a decent income with the company.
My Personal PartyLite Review
At the end of the day, PartyLite is like other MLMs. In theory, it can be a great way to make money but most people won’t achieve that goal.
Instead, the process of making money ends up being incredibly stressful.
For that matter, you are trying to pressure friends and family members into making purchases, attending parties and joining the company. That’s never going to be great for your relationships.
Still, when it comes down to it, how well PartyLite works for you depends on who you are and what you want.
For example, if you have a large social network and know many people interested in scents and in candles then yes, you might find success.
Likewise, the company may be a good choice if you simply want to earn a little money.
In fact, that aspect is where many of the positive PartyLite reviews come from.
Making a decent income with PartyLite can be difficult and might be almost impossible for some people. But, earning a little money here and there from sales is achievable.
In many cases, people just join the company because they want to offset their own costs.
I mean, if you were already buying PartyLite candles and scents, why not join the company? Even if you mostly ignored the recruitment side of things and only rarely held parties, you would make some money.
Honestly, PartyLite even has more potential than many other MLMs in this area.
After all, the product selection is somewhat uncommon (for a direct marketing company) and you are selling consumable items.
If you’re buying products from PartyLite anyway or just want to make a little bit of money, then this company isn’t a bad choice. You might even find it enjoyable.
Indeed, the company is better than most, especially because it has:
- The ability to sell online
- Decent products
- The chance to earn your starter kit
- A bonus for high sales
- No quotas to meet
Even with this, PartyLite is always going to be limited.
After all, you’re trying to sell to a fairly small audience, most of whom aren’t going to buy the products regularly.
To get past this, it’s worth moving to a technique that has much more potential. There are multiple such ways out there but the one that I suggest is called affiliate marketing.
Affiliate marketing is similar to PartyLite in that you get to promote products. You could even choose to focus on candles and fragrances, if you wanted to.
However, affiliate marketing is an online technique and it doesn’t tend to focus on recruitment. As a consequence, you have access to a much larger audience and you’re not limited to a single company either.
There are also some amazing training options for affiliate marketing, where you learn all of the steps, rather than being thrown in the deep end.
Even if you’re unsure about the idea of affiliate marketing, taking a look at the training can be a great decision. The information provided can help you to work out whether affiliate marketing is something that might be appealing for you.
The best place for doing this is the site called Wealthy Affiliate. The site is amazing for up-to-date training and also has considerable community support.
Honestly, it’s worth trying out for the support alone.
