Low traffic. It’s the bane of any website, but in reality, you don’t need as much traffic as you think to be successful online.
In fact, being successful with a website isn’t so much about getting as much traffic as possible, but about being smart about your traffic.
The type of traffic that you get can really help you determine how to generate revenue from your website – because it won’t be the same in all cases.
An Alternative to High Traffic
Now, don’t get me wrong. High traffic is a very good thing and it plays a huge role in the success of a site, but on its own, traffic doesn’t equal profit.
In fact, you can have a high traffic site that doesn’t make much profit or a low traffic site that makes considerable amounts of profit.
Getting and maintaining high traffic to a website can be very challenging, and that traffic will often stop the moment you cut back on the amount of work you do.
After all, websites and blogs often try to get the attention of as many people as possible. Often this will involve working across multiple different platforms and trying every approach to get traffic.
Some websites aim to have 10,000 or more visitors to their site every day, a goal that is not easy to meet.
Does this sound like hard work yet?
But, isn’t this how to generate revenue from your website?
It is, but it isn’t the only way.
The first thing to understand is that all traffic is not equal.
For the majority of websites, you’re trying to get conversions. Maybe this involves getting someone to click on an ad, or maybe you need them to purchase a product.
So, you don’t want just anyone coming to your site, you want visitors that are actually going to convert.
This is quite a different goal and you’re not looking for the same types of people.
Instead of aiming for high traffic, you can shift the focus of your website to focus on a smaller number of targeted viewers.
This means that the people who end up viewing your site are likely to get a lot of value from it and they are likely to be willing to spend more because of this.
Profiting from Low Traffic
The key to profiting from a lower amount of traffic is to create and attract passionate readers who are likely to pay more for products and to become repeat customers.
This isn’t an approach most affiliate marketing websites follow.
Instead, most customers are likely to purchase once and not come back to the website.
As models go, attracting large numbers of people to your website just to have them leave after a single purchase isn’t terribly effective.
In fact, you end up with better results if you focus on attracting a smaller number of people, and turn them into repeat visitors and purchasers.
This means that you need to place a strong emphasis on developing a customer relationship between you and your audience.
This relationship is a little bit different than you might expect.
I’m not simply talking about building up engagement and trust with your audience, I’m actually talking about focusing on making, and keeping, an audience that is going to buy things.
Don’t be afraid that this approach will scare some of your viewers away, because it probably will.
The concept is that you don’t want those viewers anyway.
Instead, you are specifically looking for, writing for, and targeting the viewers who are actually going to purchase from you, and purchase consistently.
Improving the Backend
One area that you want to pay some attention to is the strategy or process that operates behind the scenes of your website.
This might include people going from visiting your site to viewing an email list, to buying a product, to advertisements for other products, and so forth.
Every website has a slightly different approach and framework, and the trick really is to work out what works best for you and for your audience.
For example, some websites have newsletters that link audience members through to training videos, which then also act as a plug for a specific product.
When you look at how to generate revenue from your website, you need to look at the steps that you use and also keep an eye on traffic numbers and conversions to work out what works and what doesn’t.
This approach also lets you know what parts of the system aren’t working well, and these are the ones that will need improvements or reorganization.
In the end, you want to create a sequence that makes sense and is compelling to your readers.
Selling Your Own Products
The best way to leverage a smaller amount of traffic is to focus on selling your own products and services.
After all, both affiliate marketing and advertising take viewers away from your website. This isn’t what you want if you are trying to create a dedicated audience.
Another advantage of selling your own products is that this approach lets you target the specific needs and interests of your audience.
This also means that you can incorporate feedback you get form one product into the next product you develop.
Overall, this means that the products you develop are much more likely to ‘hit the mark’ with your target audience than some random product you happen to be promoting is.
When you do sell your product, it is worth taking the time to create and sell premium products, which may cost a significant amount more than you might expect, even in the range of hundreds or thousands of dollars.
This will depend on your specific audience and focus of course, but in general people have a tendency to significantly undervalue the products and services they offer, which can cripple their ability to make profit.
What Do You Sell?
The idea of selling products you create scares a lot of people, because it means you actually have to have a product to sell.
For the approach we are discussing here, you ideally want a series of products that progressively increase in price and in value to cater for the people who visit your website.
People often imagine that they can’t ever have something as good as what is already out there, but this isn’t true and you can certainly create products if you put your mind to it.
Now, I imagine that most people aren’t going to have a set of products to sell when they first start a site, so a good place to start is to sell services. After all, there really is a lot of demand for services, such as professional training or coaching.
Providing services also gives you the ability to work out what exactly your audience is looking for and what needs of theirs aren’t being met.
In fact, the more you understand your customers and what they want, the better you can build your site and your products to meet their needs. Often, this will allow you to develop services and products that fill the need in a unique way that nobody else does.
Even if you don’t think you have much to offer, there is a lot you can learn simply by developing a product or a service and putting it out there.
The absolute worst case is that no one buys what you are selling, but even then, you can begin to find out what people are wanting to buy, what they need help with and how much money they actually want to spend.
This is something you simply won’t find out from market research alone.
It’s also worth noting that there are many different ways to produce products that you can sell.
A common approach is to write eBooks – but for people who struggle with writing or want a more professional product, it is possible to outsource some or all of the work.
This actually applies to just about anything, and there are many experienced individuals who offer these services.
Regardless of whether you have a high traffic or a low traffic site, being successful online involves being unique and offering something that other people simply don’t offer.
This is something you have to be acutely aware of as you are developing your site and your products.
Simply put, there has to be something about your site and your products that gives it a competitive advantage over what else is out there.
Maybe this is a unique approach, maybe it is a product that no one else has thought of or maybe it is simply putting more research and detail into what you are providing.
This is particularly important for low traffic sites because you are focusing on being a specialist and meeting a specific set of needs for a specific group of people.
As you get stronger within the area, your site can easily become the place that people go to in order to solve the specific problem that they are experiencing.
The profit potential when this happens is huge, as your specialist standing allows you to charge much higher prices than you could otherwise.
Traffic is important for any website, but don’t believe that high traffic is a significant indicator of success.
As I have shown in this post, it really is possible to be successful with a low traffic site, and some of these sites actually end up being more successful than their high traffic counterparts.
Furthermore, can you imagine the profit potential when sites like this start to be really successful and the amount of quality, targeted traffic increases?
When that happens, the site will be much more profitable than similar sites that don’t take this approach.
Because of this, it is critical to realize that the amount of traffic you get is not an indicator of the success of your website at all.
In fact, you traffic number doesn’t really tell you anything at all.
After all, there is a huge difference between 100 highly targeted visitors and 100 visitors that don’t have much to do with your site at all.
As you can imagine, one of these outcomes will produce much more profit than the other.
Instead, you need to focus your attention on the number of buyers you have and how much they are spending.
This is the area where you will need to work on and make improvements because it is critical to making a profit and being successful online.
The approach that I am discussing in this article is a little different than approaches I talk about elsewhere in the site, and it does involve being focused and dedicated right from the start, which may not work from everyone.
Nevertheless, this method provides a strong indication that it really is possible to be successful and highly profitable online even on a website that does not see a significant amount of traffic.
