I’ve always been interested in how to make money writing online.
After all, writing is such a necessary skill, yet at the same time, there are some people who are much better at it than others.
If you are good at writing, then the online environment really does open up a lot of doors for you in terms of income, regardless of whether you want to work for yourself, or for other people.
In fact, there are so many different ways to make money online through writing that it is a little difficult to know where to start.
Writing for Yourself
One of the most appealing things about the online environment is the chance to work for yourself.
No bosses, no deadlines, no pressure – it sounds wonderful doesn’t it?
I’ll be honest, there are many things that I love about working online, but it is challenging too.
So, where do you start?
In general, if you are going to be writing for yourself online, you will want to have your own website.
This sounds difficult, but it really isn’t. Website creation has got a lot easier over the past few years, and you can make your own site without needing to know code or needing to pay someone else to do it.
Personally, I like Site Rubix as a tool for website creation – but I’m getting off topic.
Developing a site (or even multiple sites) is important because the site becomes a way for you to earn money, and also for you to share your views with the rest of the world.
Earning money through sites takes many forms – but it is all related to writing.
In essence, the concept is to develop a site on a topic you choose, whether it is a personal blog, a site on a particular interest, or a site that covers a number of different interests and then use this site to make money.
Regardless of your topic, writing becomes one of the key tools for getting your site ranked, and for getting people to visit it.
Take blogging as an example.
Some people write personal blogs that have thousands or hundreds of thousands of visitors.
For example, there is a blog called Three Hundred Sandwiches that has been mentioned in multiple news stories and continues to have a lot of followers.
It is relatively easy to make money through blogs like this and the simplest approach is to use services like Google Adsense, where you make money through hosting advertisements.
This can be very profitable when you have a large amount of traffic to a website.
Alternatively, there is an approach called affiliate marketing, where you promote the products of other people.
Many people make whole sites around selling one particular product or service, or they might make a site that focuses on discussions and reviews about a particular type of product.
Honestly, the options are pretty much endless.
A final way for how to make money writing online is developing your own products.
Now, this one might be particularly interesting for any budding authors out there because you can even make your own novel and sell it.
Realistically, you can make just about anything as long as there are people out there who may be interested in buying it and this goes far beyond just writing.
For example, you might be selling handicrafts off a personal blog, and write about how you created the products and the motivation behind them.
How to Make Money Writing Online For Other People
Personally, I think writing for yourself is the best way of earning money online, but there is another approach.
In general, this approach is called freelancing, and it isn’t limited to writing.
When you freelance, you are essentially renting out your services in the short-term or in the long-term.
Freelance writers are very common and there is a large amount of demand for them.
I have a friend who has been making money online through freelance writing for about four years now.
She said that it works so well for her because she loves writing, and because she has a skill set that makes her stand out from other freelancers.
Writing for other people can be tricky and it’s certainly not for everyone.
When you write for others, you need to pay close attention to what the client wants and you risk getting a client who is completely unreasonable.
However, if you do have skills that are a little unusual, writing for others can be a good approach, particularly because how much you get paid can get quite high.
My friend is an example of this. She has extensive experience in internet marketing and in academics and offers services in both areas.
She told me that her work has included designing course content for a college, writing a policy brief and working on drafts and final versions of academic papers.
Personally, my preference for how to make money writing online is affiliate marketing and developing my own products, but everyone has their own preferences and strengths.
