Internet marketing has become a very popular way of earning money.
So it shouldn’t come as a surprise that colleges have decided to get in on the game and offer their own online internet marketing degrees.
Getting an internet marketing degree sounds fantastic on paper, particularly as the world is becoming more and more digital.
However, in practice, an internet marketing degree is largely a waste of time and money.
Now, you can go out and get an internet marketing degree if you really want to, but before you do, you might want to consider the following points.
Internet Marketing Degrees Are Seriously Expensive
Getting any type of degree costs and they are often quite expensive.
To get an internet marketing degree, you’re looking at paying many thousands of dollars.
For example, at Full Sail University a Bachelor’s degree in Internet Marketing costs $8,000 a semester for seven semesters (middle row in the image). That’s $56,000 for a Bachelor’s degree.
Getting a Masters is a bit cheaper (top row), calculating out to around $31,000.
However, you do have to get the Bachelor’s degree first.
In fact, the only degree here that is reasonably priced is the Graduate Certificate (bottom row), but that doesn’t offer much, and honestly $7,500 is still a lot of money.
This is just one example of course, but many colleges offer prices in this range.
Now, I know that these prices aren’t very different to getting any other type of degree, but I honestly think that an internet marketing degree is much less valuable than most other types of degree.
Internet Marketing Changes too Fast
Colleges tend to focus on fields that change slowly over time.
This is important, because colleges have to go through a lot of processes to get courses approved and taught.
Because of this, the curriculum of a course will change only a little from one year to the next.
Internet marketing is tricky in this way.
It’s a field that changes very quickly and often the changes are unpredictable.
College courses simply can’t keep up with that amount of change.
This means that most of the time you are going to be learning things that are at least slightly out of date.
By the time you get all the way out of your degree, you will probably find that what you learned at the start is entirely outdated.
Realistically, internet marketing is a field that you need to keep learning.
You don’t just take a course or two (or even a degree) and then use that the rest of your online career.
The real idea is to continue to teach yourself internet marketing as you go and stay up-to-date on any changes that occur within the internet marketing field – as those changes happen.
This isn’t something that an internet marketing degree can offer.
It’s Not Necessary
My biggest gripe about getting an internet marketing degree is that it is simply not necessary.
If you are looking at getting a job within the internet marketing field, then there may be some specific jobs that do require a degree.
However, these are the minority. Most internet marketing jobs actually look for experience over education.
This is actually a major problem.
If you end up getting a degree, then you are actually missing out, because you will be getting education instead of experience – when it is very possible to get both education and experience at the same time.
That really is the point.
It’s very possible to learn internet marketing and SEO techniques without ever having to take an online internet marketing degree, and without spending all the time and money that it requires.
For example, there are online training courses that you can sign up for.
Many of these courses are developed by internet marketers, who have a much better understanding of the field.
Honestly, you learn much more from online training courses than you ever could through an internet marketing degree.
Furthermore, online training courses tend to offer a comprehensive bank of information that you can learn and relearn from.
The information serves as an important reference point for the future as well.
You can also find out information from blog posts that internet marketers make and from sites like this one that have a focus on teaching people how to be successful in the online environment.
You Can Be Your Own Boss
The thing is, getting a degree in internet marketing is really only relevant if you are trying to get a job in the field.
As you can see from what I mentioned before, it is very possible to teach yourself pretty much everything you need, particularly if you are smart about where you look online.
There are certainly ‘real’ jobs within the internet marketing field, but there is another direction that you can go altogether,
Many people choose to develop their own online business and make money themselves, rather than relying on a boss or a company.
As a field, internet marketing has really been taking off – which isn’t really surprising.
More people are spending money online than ever before and this makes selling things online a very profitable business.
Making money online might sound a bit like a dream, but it really is possible, and there are a lot of people like me out there who are successful in this field.
For some people, this approach to making money is never anything more than a way to make a little bit of money on the side.
However, other people have been able to turn this into a full-time business and make a lot of money in the process.
Internet marketing isn’t as hard as it seems, and it isn’t worth going into debt just to get a degree that you don’t even need.
Now I’ll admit that there are some cases where an internet marketing degree can be a good thing.
However, these are largely cases where you actually need the degree as a qualification, rather than for the information it contains.
If you are even considering getting an internet marketing degree, then I suggest that you take some time aside and find out whether you actually need the degree and whether it would even help you.
Chances are, there are better ways of getting the information that you need without having to shell out for an internet marketing degree.
In fact, online training sites are a great alternative to an internet marketing degree.
These sites can offer just as much information (if not more) as an internet marketing degree. At the same time, online training sites tend to cost a fraction of what an internet marketing degree would cost. Additionally, a site will often have more up-to-date information than a degree can offer.
That just makes sense, as a site is a more flexible environment where it is much easier to alter content.
There are a range of different sites out there. Some of those are worthwhile and others are scams.
The site that I recommend is one known as Wealthy Affiliate.
Wealthy Affiliate is different than most other training sites because it is community-based. This allows Wealthy Affiliate to offer much more support and interaction.
At the same time, the community-based nature of the site means that new training is constantly developed and the site is quick to respond to any changes in the internet marketing field.
All-in-all, those elements make Wealthy Affiliate a great place to learn.
