It doesn’t sound like a particularly fun way to earn money, but for some people, it is a very effective approach.
However, finding legitimate data entry jobs and avoiding scams can be challenging, particularly as there are so many options out there.
Data entry will never be a way to get rich quick – and you have to be prepared to do a lot of work for relatively low pay.
Realistically, you will probably end up earning less than minimum wage in a data entry job, particularly when you first start out.
Above all else, if you want to be successful in data entry, you need to be able to find the legitimate jobs that are out there, and avoid the scams.
There are probably ten times as many scams for data entry as there are actual jobs.
What to Avoid
The amount of scams in data entry is one of the reasons that it is a highly controversial way to earn money.
I’ve heard many people say that all data entry work is a scam, but honestly, this isn’t true.
There is legitimate data entry work out there; it’s just a matter of finding it.
The first thing to be aware of is that data entry is a low skilled job and low skilled jobs tend to pay low.
Any company claiming you can make a fortune through data entry is misleading you and is probably trying to sell you something.
Costs and Fees
Pay close attention to anything people try to sell you.
Most data entry work does not require any special training, but companies will try to sell you courses, certifications or training books anyway.
Most of the time the information in these is irrelevant and often it is a way to promote or sell something else altogether.
There are a few data entry fields that do require specific training, such as medical coding or legal transcription.
If you are looking at going in this direction, be very careful about what training you get, and make sure you research the training very carefully.
In the same way, be very careful about anything that charges you a fee for a list of opportunities or for something like that.
There are many places to go to find opportunities without having to pay for the privilege.
Additionally, companies that do charge you, tend not to provide what they claim.
Most of the time, these companies are simply trying to make money from anyone who will believe their advertising.
‘Non-Traditional Data Entry’
The phrase ‘non-traditional data entry’ pops up now and again, and it is something to avoid.
Normally, this phrase is used as a way to get people involved in other fields, like affiliate marketing.
Personally, I think affiliate marketing is a better option than data entry for a long-term way to earn money online, and I’ll talk about this more at the end of the post. However, affiliate marketing is very different than data entry and requires different skills and levels of commitment.
Because of this, sites that use the phrase ‘non-traditional data entry’ are normally trying to mislead readers and they certainly aren’t offering legitimate data entry jobs.
Legitimate Data Entry Jobs
This is a Canadian transcription company that allows people to apply for work through the website.
The company provides a few different types of work, including transcription, reviewing and editing.
More skill is required for this company than for some others, and the company does seek individuals who can type at least 60 words per minute and who are available at specific times of the day.
Axion Data Services
This company has a strong positive reputation and is known as being a legitimate company that provides data entry work, normally at between 20 and 25 hours’ worth of work per week.
However, one catch is that the company only has a limited number of data entry positions, around 70 total in the United States area. This means that the company frequently doesn’t have openings, although it does still allow people to register their interest and information.
Clickworker is a very easy company to apply for and doesn’t have many requirements.
Additionally, it has the advantage of always having jobs available, including data entry and also writing jobs.
Like many data entry jobs, users are paid per piece they produce, rather than by the amount of time it takes.
The company estimates that its users will earn around $9 USD per hour although the accuracy of this statement is difficult to know.
One alternative approach for finding data entry jobs and avoiding scams is to look at sites that offer freelance jobs.
Good examples of these types of sites are Freelancer.com and Elance.com, both of which host a large number of projects that fit all different types of people.
Even if you can’t find a data entry job on there that works for you, you might be able to find something entirely different that meets your needs.
The advantage of these sites is that the company ensures that transactions go well, providing a level of protection for freelancers and for the people who offer the jobs.
There is also a lot of variety in terms of projects and pay. However, it can sometimes be tricky to get work, as there is a lot of competition.
Data Entry versus Other Approaches
If you find a legitimate company, data entry itself isn’t a scam – despite what people claim.
The biggest issue with data entry is that it doesn’t pay well. The exact pay varies depending on who you are working for, but in general, it will be less than you would earn from a ‘normal’ job.
I’ll be honest, I don’t like data entry. It can be a very monotonous job and the pay simply doesn’t work for me.
However, it can be a good approach in some situations.
In particular, data entry tends to be a good approach if you have limited income, and need to earn money relatively quickly.
Even then, you need to be very careful about the companies you choose to work for and their terms and conditions.
However, if you don’t need money relatively quickly, there are more productive uses of time.
An intermediate approach is where you start your own freelancing career, which might be in data entry or it might be in something else, like writing.
This approach gives you more control over your clients and also lets you set your own level of payment.
A more advanced approach is developing your own business through affiliate marketing or selling your own products.
This does require more effort and work on your part, but it is very doable.
Over time, making money from your own business gets easier, particularly as you understand the processes and the field better.
Personally, I think this is the most effective approach if you have the time to build up your business and to learn how to do it.
I love this approach because it means I can slowly build my business over time and slot it around the rest of my life, which is much easier than freelancing or data entry.
However, it really does depend on what works best in your own life and with your skills.
For example, I know many people who have been very successful at affiliate marketing, but I have another friend who has developed a full-time successful freelance writing career, without ever even developing her own website.
