People tend to get into internet marketing incredibly optimistically.
But often, people don’t take the time to figure out how long does it take to make money blogging or through affiliate marketing.
Often, it’s assumed that making money with affiliate marketing is relatively simple and fast, because affiliate marketing seems like just blogging with some keyword research thrown in.
However, you shouldn’t go into the field assuming that.
Realistically, you shouldn’t really be assuming anything.
Let’s get this straight right now. Affiliate marketing is not a fast way of making money. It’s an effective strategy and you can create a long-term profitable business, but it takes time.
If you’re looking for money to pay off your bills at the end of the month – you’re looking in the wrong place.
I have talked to so many people who fall for the hype and think that they will be getting a paycheck within a few days of starting. That simply isn’t true.
When it comes to making money online, you really have to make a choice.
Either you work towards a long-term business, or you try approaches that get you some money quickly.
Now – there are other legitimate ways to make money quickly online, but they all take work and that isn’t what I am focusing on here.
So, when you are looking at how long does it take to make money blogging, you need to keep in mind that you really are developing a long-term business.
The concept is that what you are developing now could be a business that you work on and develop for years to come.
When people try to make money online, they have an idea in their head of how long it ‘should’ take. People tend to work on the system or approach until they get to that point, and then they start asking questions.
After all, if you weren’t making money following a system that was supposed to make you money, you’d ask questions too.
The problem is people tend to have the wrong idea in their head about how long it should take to make money.
I’ll tell you right now.
If you walk into affiliate marketing expecting to make money in two weeks – you’re probably going to be disappointed.
I mean, it took me more than six months of learning before I even started to get my site online.
I’m a bit on the extreme side, but it isn’t uncommon for it to take six months or a year before people start to earn money through affiliate marketing.
How long it will take really depends on how you are learning and how much time you are putting into it.
For example, if you’re learning how to make money online through a decent training site, it’s quite a bit faster than trying to figure out everything yourself. I personally think everyone should start out on a training site, even if it’s only to get the basics down.
Otherwise it’s far too easy to get confused and end up second guessing yourself.
Likewise, it is going to take you longer to make money if you are only putting in a little bit of time each week.
For me, I probably put in at least ten hours a week of learning, plus the time actually developing content. However, my research is a bit more in-depth than most people’s, so the learning process took me longer.
I know some people who literally took two weeks off work and worked on affiliate marketing and learning affiliate marketing for about 50 hours a week for those two weeks. Needless to say, they got to their end goal faster than the people who simply put in a few posts here and there.
When you are looking at getting involved in affiliate marketing, you need to be realistic about the goals you set yourself.
Have a look at how long you have to spend in learning and developing the site and how patient you are prepared to be.
While you’re at it, ask yourself if you’re prepared to stick with it.
If it took six months to make any profit, could you consistently work on your site over that period and not give up? If you can’t, affiliate marketing probably isn’t for you.
Learning from your Mistakes
While we’re on the topic, you can look into what you are doing with your website to see whether there is any issue with what you are doing.
In particular, your traffic and your conversions will tell you something about the way your visitors are behaving.
One thing you want to look at is whether people are coming to your site for the right reasons. Some of the information from Google Analytics might be able to help you here.
Another thing to look at is how you are selling things. You might be being too aggressive in your sales, or you might not be aggressive enough.
I’m not going to go into this area too much more because it is the subject of other posts. However, if you look at your site objectively and even get advice on it, you might be able to figure out what you are doing wrong.
If you get to the point where it doesn’t look like you are doing anything wrong, then simply keep doing what you are doing and sit tight.
The waiting might be frustrating, but you will get there eventually.
If you are struggling with your progress, want to see how others are doing or simply want some feedback, a great place to turn to is Wealthy Affiliate.
