Affiliate marketing is often promoted as a way of earning money online, but people are often hesitant – which isn’t really surprising.
After all, there are so many internet marketing scams online that many people give up on the idea of earning money online altogether.
I completely understand the frustration, and I was in the same boat myself when I first started to look into the field.
The thing is, successful affiliate marketing websites really do exist, and most of them aren’t large companies with SEO experts at their disposal.
Instead, they are people like me and you, who wanted to make money online, but first had to figure out where to start and what to expect.
What Do They Look Like?
There are many different types of affiliate marketing site success stories.
Some of them are small niche sites, that focus on a specific narrow area and promote products from within it.
I have seen all types of successful sites in this area, such as a website focusing exclusively on electric razors and the products that complement these razors.
Another site focused on providing reviews and discussions on the best tablets to get for your children.
A third site chronicled a novice’s journey into brewing, sharing his experiences and the knowledge he gained along the way.
All of these sites, and many more, are successful.
Likewise, there are authority sites, which are much broader, and the authors try to be an expert in a given area, such as an authority site on health and nutrition, or one on making money online.
I have even seen a number of different successful affiliate marketing sites that focus on different approaches towards losing weight and keeping it off.
Realistically, it isn’t the topics of the sites that make them successful, or even the skills of the authors.
Instead, success in affiliate marketing is related to the desire to learn and the techniques that are used to develop and maintain the sites. These are all things that you can learn.
How Many Succeed?
No one really knows how many successful affiliate marketing websites there are.
In fact, it’s even difficult to look at a website and work out whether it is successful or not.
Part of this problem comes from the fact that everyone defines success differently.
For some people, having an affiliate marketing website is a way of making a little bit of extra money on the side. For others, their goal might be to make a full-time income, and eventually replace their job.
Clearly, the second goal is going to take more time and effort to succeed, but both goals are achievable, and there are a number of people who are successful at both approaches.
In fact, I personally know people who have been successful at both levels.
It is true that more people fail than succeed at affiliate marketing, but this isn’t really a reflection of the approach itself. For example, I have seen some people throw around the figure of 90% or 95% failure rate.
First of all, this figure is most likely made up – because there isn’t any actual way to measure how many people succeed and how many fail.
Second, one of the biggest reasons that people fail at affiliate marketing is that they come into the process thinking that it will be a quick and easy solution to their money problems.
If this is what you are wanting – walk away now – but know this, there simply isn’t any approach that offers a quick and easy income.
I think of affiliate marketing like a job.
Just like a job it requires learning, time and effort, and it will not all come overnight.
However, unlike a job, you get to be your own boss, take the approaches you think are valuable and you don’t have to rely on a volatile employment market.
Those advantages really do make affiliate marketing a powerful idea.
