In the internet marketing field, there are many types of products that are scams without a doubt, but Private Label Rights (or PLR for short) products don’t really fall into this category.
PLR products are interesting and they are controversial.
There are some people out there who absolutely love them and use PLR eBooks and articles all the time, but other people absolutely hate them.
Types of PLR
If you are going to use PLR, you have to understand what it is and what is involved.
There is a range of different product types that fall under PLR, but the biggest thing about PLR is that you get the rights to anything that you purchase.
For example, if you were to purchase a PLR eBook, you would have the rights to sell it as-is on your website and you would also have the rights to edit it or change it and then sell it. This can be appealing because it gives people the chance to sell products without the effort of writing them.
However, there’s a catch and a pretty major one.
Using PLR content as-is tends to be a pretty bad idea.
With an eBook, do you want to be selling a product that is literally identical to the products other people are selling? After all, everyone who bought the PLR is going to have the same set of products and, at least, some of them are going to try to sell the particular eBook you choose.
What you sell on your site actually has a huge influence on what people think of your site and even how likely they are to keep visiting it. If you are selling poor quality products or products that contain incorrect information, you are going to lose customers fast.
While there are some good quality PLR eBooks out there, they do tend to be in the minority. After all, if the product was actually any good, why isn’t the author trying to sell it as a book, rather than as PLR?
Here’s an excerpt from one PLR eBook, which is basically about getting rich:
The overall theme of this part is making money from blogs – which can be done. However, what is being said is completely unhelpful. If you’re talking to a group of people who want to become rich, most of them probably aren’t even going to know what a niche is, let alone how to pick one or what a good one actually is.
Yet, this is the only time the book really covers niche selection so anyone reading the book is going to be left with information that they can’t really do anything with. This is going to result in some pretty annoyed customers, particularly as most PLR companies recommend charging upwards of $20 for a single one of these eBooks.
I’ve read a number of different PLR eBooks and articles because I wondered whether it was a good approach for a while and I can honestly say that I very rarely seen anything good.
One of the most common approaches with PLR content overall is for the article or eBook to be very vague. This often means that they will tell people what to do, but not how and a lot of the information they do provide is obvious, even to someone not experienced in the field.
This means that most of the content in any piece of PLR will provide little value to the reader.
Again, this really isn’t a good thing for the reputation of your site.
Most of the time, PLR articles are somewhere around 500 words and they have that same vague quality that the eBooks have.
Personally, I think that there are relatively few topics out there that can be covered well in 500 words.
Additionally, Google tends to favor long articles, which means that using a short article to try and rank is never a good idea.
The content you get through PLR is also the same as what everyone else gets. This means that there is no way to use this content directly. If you did, you would get penalized by search engines and not rank at all.
Many people use this content on article sites and then link back to their website.
Personally, I think that this is a horrible approach.
Not only are you associating your site with poor quality content, but you are also creating a link between your site and duplicate content online. Even if Google doesn’t penalize you for this initially, it may well get you in trouble later on.
Other Types of PLR
There are also other types of PLR out there, such as videos and images.
The videos suffer from many of the same problems that the eBooks and articles do, namely that they are vague and don’t provide a lot of value. Additionally, you run the risk of videos being low quality or having poor audio.
This can be very frustrating.
You don’t have the same ability to rewrite a video as you do an eBook or an article, so if the video is bad, you are stuck with it.
Most of the PLR images I’ve seen are relatively decent, but they are also very overused images.
There is also an inherent risk because you cannot know for certain whether the images they provide are actually royalty free or not. This is a major issue because infringing copyright can be expensive and having a lawsuit against you is not a good image for your site.
A major issue with PLR is that you typically don’t know what quality you are getting until you actually buy it.
Most of the time, PLR writing is very low quality and personally, it isn’t writing that I would want on any site of mine. Additionally, PLR is frequently under-researched
My biggest issue with PLR is how it is represented. Sometimes you will see companies selling PLR as PLR, where you know what to expect, exactly what is involved in actually using the PLR and more or less what you get in them.
For example, one site offers this description for the PLR that it offers:
With this, you know exactly what you are getting and what you are paying for. Whether it is worth the cost or not will depend on your personal preferences, but at least, there’s no mystery about the product.
Additionally, when companies use this type of marketing, they are targeting people who actually know what PLR is.
Unfortunately, this approach to PLR is relatively rare.
Most sites that sell PLR do so by using this type of marketing:
This is a marketing strategy that is targeted at people with no idea what PLR is or how it works.
For example, many sites offer turnkey pre-made websites where all a person has to do is buy the product and then the websites are ready to go without any additional work at all. At least, that’s the theory.
Just about any time a site sells any form of niche package, whether this is content or a fully-fledged site, that package contains PLR. Often this isn’t even clear, so users don’t realize they are getting a site that is essentially the same as someone else’s.
I hate this form of marketing and it is very common.
Additionally, you will see marketing approaches like this:
This is actually really stupid. The product basically gives you a sales page for your site, but this page is almost entirely identical to everyone else’s who used the product. This is a sure-fire way to kill your rankings, which pretty much destroys your chances of profit at the same time.
If you are promoting the same product as other people using the same sales copy, then do you really think you are going to see much in the way of sales?
It’s a very ineffective approach, but there are still a large number of people who actually purchase products like this.
Actually Using PLR
Many of the people who advocate for PLR argue that you should use it in a specific way.
In particular, you shouldn’t use the PLR content as-is, but instead, you should take it, tweak it and edit it to make it your own. Along the way, you make it sound better and be more beneficial to readers. Oh, and while you’re at it, you’re supposed to do some basic fact checking to make sure the PLR is accurate.
If you want to do all of that, well good for you.
Personally though, I think it is far too much work. Realistically, I think it would be faster to write an article yourself than to do all of the research, editing and tweaking needed to improve a PLR article.
Additionally, the article you wrote yourself would end up being better quality and more interesting overall.
For eBooks, I can understand the approach a little more, but honestly, it will still take a lot of time and effort to revise a PLR eBook and the outcomes won’t really be that great.
Myself, I think that if you are going use PLR, it should be for ideas and inspiration only. Even then, it’s probably not worth the effort unless you have managed to find high-quality PLR (which is pretty rare).
PLR is designed as a shortcut and shortcuts in internet marketing really don’t work that well.
PLR and Writing
If PLR appeals to you because it gets you out of some content writing, think again, it’s just not worth it for the low-quality writing that you get. The thing is, if you want to make a website without doing your own writing, then it is possible, but PLR isn’t the way to do it.
From my own experience and research, the only real way to make a website success without having to write content is to outsource your writing. This is actually something that successful internet marketers often do because many find that they want more free time or can’t keep up with writing for multiple sites.
With outsourcing, you can get quality and unique content. However, you can’t learn to write well that way. Ultimately, just about everyone should try their own writing first and go from there.
Finally, with both PLR and outsourcing, you pay for what you get. So, if you are getting a lot of content for a very low price, most of the time it will be poor quality content.
This is something to be aware of – because things are rarely ever as good as they seem.
If you are considering PLR at all, make sure you know what you are getting into. PLR tends to involve a lot of hidden work, and it can be time-consuming and even damaging to your site if you’re not careful.
This is even truer if you buy one of the large packs of PLR or packs that come with a lot of free bonuses.
Realistically, the more PLR you get, the more time you have to spend going through the different pieces of PLR to work out whether they are relevant to you and whether they are any good.
Personally, I think that PLR is something to stay away from altogether. It scarcely ever helps and most of the time is far more effort than it is worth.
And if a site is telling you how wonderful the PLR it offers is and how it can change your life it is nothing but marketing hype.
The thing is, developing a successful online business isn’t something that happens at the click of a button and it’s much better to take the time and learn how to develop a business the right way. That way you end up with something long-term that is actually worth the effort.
